Why did I choose to study Japanese?
I grew up in Hong Kong, a place heavily influenced by Japanese culture. I have been a big fan of Japanese food, TV dramas, movies and everything. Come to think of it, it was strange I never seriously considered learning Japanese back in Hong Kong. What truly motivated me to formally take a Japanese language course here at Columbia is that, as a doctoral student in Chinese history, I have to acquire advanced reading proficiency in Japanese. Apart from fulfilling the language requirement, I actually find learning Japanese a lot of fun. I totally enjoy every class!
